System Leadership

System Leaders

In the simplest terms, system leaders are those who work beyond their own school to support colleagues to improve their schools. This might include:

  • sharing successful practice with colleagues in other schools
  • providing coaching in a specialist area
  • providing courses
  • providing opportunities to share effective practice and share moderation opportunities

There are a number of system leader roles where colleagues demonstrate they meet national standards for the role and have been designated as having the proven ability to support colleagues to improve their own school:

There is often a cost for system leader support, which is negotiated between you and the system leader’s school.

National Leaders of Governance Advocates - Their mission is to improve the quality of governance in the region, in order to improve outcomes for pupils. They work with sub-regional teams of NLGs who offer free support to governors in the region. NLGs can provide ongoing coaching and mentoring which may be especially helpful if you are new to a chair’s role; equally they will respond to an email or telephone call to discuss a single concern. Many NLGs are trained to undertake external reviews of governance (which – unlike the coaching – may incur a cost). More information here
