The Primary PGCE School Direct course provides an early opportunity to work in one of Exeter’s primary schools. The first two weeks of the Autumn Term are spent in what will become your home school, where you will be based for most of your time while you train. We believe that becoming familiar with your school at the beginning of the year is a very positive way to introduce you to the exciting challenges in the months ahead!

Much of the Autumn Term thereafter is spent working at the St Lukes campus of the University of Exeter. During this time trainees are encouraged to visit their home school when study time allows. In November a two week return to the home school takes place to prepare for the first teaching placement which begins in January.

The first placement typically lasts for the first half of the Spring Term, while in the second half of the term trainees work for 6 weeks in their second placement school in the opposite Key Stage. After Easter trainees return for the summer term to their home school where the remainder of their training takes place.  During the two terms spent on teaching placement trainees attend the University for occasional seminar days, events held at St Luke’s campus for everyone on the PGCE course.

Taster sessions for our Primary (5-11) and Early Years (3-7) PGCE programmes are held in member schools, and you are warmly invited to come along to meet colleagues and discuss your plans. These events take place on a regular basis so please email or call 01392 927171 for more information.
